When Disaster Strikes …
June 4, 2015

It happens when you least expect it and it usually happens at the worst time. Your organization’s server has been running fine when suddenly disaster strikes - the hardware crashes or an act of nature destroys your data center. In recent months several of our customers have experienced the loss of their application servers. In some cases recovery was very quick and complete because those sites were prepared. In some cases there were significant delays in the recovery process and even the loss of data because those sites were not prepared. Is your organization prepared for a disaster?

Here are some tips your IT staff can use to ensure your organization is ready:

  • Database backups must be done on a regular basis, nightly at minimum.
  • Critical application files must be backed up on a regular basis.
  • The backup files must be stored in a place easily accessible in your Data Center, and also a copy stored off-site in case the Data Center is destroyed.
  • Test your restore process periodically to ensure you know how to do it, and to ensure the database and application files are being backed up correctly.
  • Have a plan in place for quickly bringing a new server online in the event your current server dies. There are several options including the use of virtual machines on-site and a disaster recovery provider for off-site service restorations.
